VARSITY CARDIGAN SWEATER HONORING HARVARD UNIVERSITY
History: The varsity letter started at Harvard. In 1865, the baseball team began embroidering an Old English "H" on their gray flannel jerseys — and for the next 25 years, the captain would award those jerseys to players who competed in the biggest games of the season. You earned the H, or you gave it back. By the 1880s, the tradition had evolved into the lettersweater — a white knit with a crimson H, first worn by the crew team and soon adopted across every Harvard sport. This cardigan is a direct descendant of that tradition, one of the oldest in American athletics.
Made with a substantial cotton yarn and a felt 'H' patch, this cardigan sweater honors a historic institution and their legacy in modern sportswear that stretches back a century and a half.
